The Augusta GreenJackets took a 6-2 win over the Lexington Legends Tuesday night, putting the second-place Legends on the verge of elimination from the South Atlantic League Southern Division race.
The Legends trail Augusta by five and one-half games with six to play.
The Legends took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning on a double by Terrance Gore, a sacrifice bunt by Raul Mondesi and a sacrifice fly by Mark Threlkeld.
Augusta answered with three runs in the bottom of the third. A single by Andrew Cain, a walk to Travious Relaford and a single by Shawn Payne loaded the bases with no outs. A sacrifice fly by Alberto Robles brought home the tying run as all three runners moved up. Mitch Delfino followed with a another sacrifice fly to put the GreenJackets in front, and Joey Rapp’s double scored Payne, giving Augusta a 3-1 lead.
The Legends cut the lead to one in the fourth on a single by Cam Gallagher, a double by Mark Donato and a run-scoring ground out by Ramon Torres.
Augusta got that run back in the bottom of the fifth, and the GreenJackets added their final two runs in the eighth. With one out, Rapp singled, Chuckie Jones singled and Ben Turner walked, loading the bases. Shayne Houck was hit by a pitch, forcing in a run. Relaford’s infield single brought Jones home with the game’s final run.
Augusta starter Martin Agosta improved his record to 9-3 with the win. He is 4-0 against the Legends this season.
Legends starter Daniel Stumpf (10-9) was the losing pitcher.
The Legends and GreenJackets meet again Wednesday night in the second game of the three-game series. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
