Three Rome pitchers held Lexington to two hits and combined to strike out 15 batters as the Braves defeated the Legends 4-1 Tuesday night.
Casey Kalenkosky gave the Braves a 1-0 lead with a solo homer in the top of the second inning.
Rome added two runs in the third on walks to Felix Marte and Levi Hyams and a two-run double by Josh Elander. The two runs batted in brought Elander’s total for the season to 58, second in the South Atlantic League behind Stetson Allie of West Virginia.
The Braves increased their lead to 4-0 in the fifth when Jose Peraza walked, stole second base, went to third on an infield hit by Hyams and scored on a wild pitch.
The Legends scored their only run in the bottom of the sixth when Rome reliever Bryam Garcia walked four batters. A bases-loaded walk to Mark Threlkeld forced in the run.
Threlkeld, the Legends’ first baseman, was playing his first game since suffering a broken left arm when he was hit by a pitch on his first at bat of the season April 5. Catcher Cam Gallagher, who had been out of action since April 24 after suffering a broken hand when he was hit by a pitch, also returned to the Legends lineup.
Garcia (5-0) took over for Williams Perez at the start of the fifth inning and picked up the win. Shae Simmons pitched the final two innings and earned his league-leading 18th save. Perez struck out seven batters, Garcia five, and Simmons three.
Legends starter Crawford Simmons (0-1), who worked the first three innings, took the loss. He was returning to pitching after missing the 2012 season with an elbow injury.
Each team has won one game in the series, which concludes Wednesday. Game time is 12:05 p.m.
