Los Angeles Clippers forward Blake Griffin hurt his left knee in a Team USA scrimmage Wednesday and is returning to Los Angeles to be examined by team doctors, league sources told Yahoo! Sports, and former UK star Anthony Davis has been called to training camp.
According to Yahoo! Sports, Griffin twisted the knee in a scrimmage, a source said. The severity of the injury is unclear. He's expected to have an MRI, possibly as soon as Thursday.
Griffin injured the same knee in Game 5 of the Clippers' first-round series against the Memphis Grizzlies.
USA Basketball officials have asked New Orleans Hornets rookie forward Davis, one of Team USA's final cuts last week, to report to training camp. Davis could be in uniform when the Americans play an exhibition game Thursday night against the Dominican Republic, the person said on condition of anonymity because there was no announcement from the team. The Dominicans are led by John Calipari, Davis' coach at Kentucky.
The NBA's top draft pick scored 9 points in the USA's exhibition victory. Team USA routed the Dominicans 113-59, Kevin Durrant led the way with 24 points. Davis never entered the game until the fourth quarter.
Prior to the exhibition UK coach John Calipari announced that the game would be his last as coach of the Dominican Republic.
